For this blog post, I want to write about my opinion about what we have talked about in class this week regarding Socrates. Even though his name is difficult for me to pronounce, I can really relate to his views and what he dedicated his life to doing. He went against what others believed and took the chance of questioning things that others would not dare question. I thought it was really unfair that people were going against him just because he was going against the norm, but I don't think that Socrates wanted other people to feel pity for him. He knew that what he was doing was the right thing, ethically and religiously, so it did not make him feel saddened that he was suffering consequences for following his beliefs. I think this is really admirable because these days you don't really see people doing that too often. People care too much about what people think, and reading about Socrates this week and seeing how he didn't care about whether others were against him reminded me of the things that I am going through personally. Socrates is definitely someone to look up to when it comes to pursuing your beliefs and not caring what others think.

  1. There is no doubt that Socrates was a bold man, and I agree that it is highly unfair how everyone went against him because of fear. You mentioned that "people care too mucha bout what people think" which is very true. But I also think that another reason why a lot of people are so different than Socrates is because we've become a lot more selfish as a society and instead of fighting for others, we just fight for ourselves. When Socrates accepted his punishment, I think he not only wanted to die for his own self and morals, but he wanted to save the lives of others and to leave a lasting message. His strategies very much so worked - as you can see now in 2010 we're studying and looking up to Socrates.

  2. I definitely agree with you when you say Socrates is a good role model and a good person to look up to. Sometimes it's really hard to stand up for your beliefs and he always did, which was very admirable. I agree that even though he was incarcerated and going through some very serious struggles, he never looked for pity.

  3. I also agree. It seemed like he was soo many steps ahead with his way of thinking and I feel like he has guided us to act and express ourselves the way we do today. He did all he could to get his message across and stayed with his beliefs even when faced with death, which is extremely admirable. He never asked for sympathy and took responsibility for everything he did, even though not everyone agreed with it.
